Open to current MSS/MSW or Post-Master's

Bryn Mawr's Home and School Visitor Certificate program is designed for the student who is interested in pursuing the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) Home and School Visitor certification credential.

Overview

Home and School Visitors (HSV) are professionals who provide a variety of services to students, families, schools, and the community. Working with pupil personnel services team, social restoration specialists and external referral agencies, community and neighborhood organizations, and individuals involved in the student's home-life, the HSV facilitates optimal schooling opportunity and personal development of the pupil. The Home and School Visitor may serve as attendance officer, who investigates reasons for school absences, enforce compulsory attendance provisions, and prevent disorderly conduct of students during school, or on their way to or from school.

Bryn Mawr's Home and School Visitor Certificate program is designed for the student who is interested in pursuing the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) Home and School Visitor certification credential. The HSV program is approved by PDE and is compliant with current PDE standards, including accommodations and adaptations for students with disabilities and English language learners. The program has been carefully developed to meet all requirements established by PDE for individuals seeking Home and School Visitor certification ().

The HSV works collaboratively with interdisciplinary client systems to meet the needs of PK-12 students to foster academic success.

In order to receive official PDE Home and School Visitor Educational Specialist certification, candidates must successfully complete HSV curriculum and apply to PDE for certification. Bryn Mawr assists HSV candidates to this end by providing all necessary course work, maintaining records of completion of academic requirements, informing candidates of their completion and readiness to apply to PDE for certification, and recommending candidates for certification.

Similar to other professional certificates or licenses, the Home and School Visitor certified professional is required to complete continuing education () programs in order to maintain/renew their certification. (See HSV Certificate Maintenance.)

The student must apply for official HSV Certification using the PDE Teacher Information Management System () website. Once the student completes the online application, the student is to notify the HSV Certifying Officer/Program Coordinator of such so that Bryn Mawr can finalize the process by affirming the student's completion of the preparation program and recommend the student for the certification.

Important:

HSV Certification is not complete or official until the certificate has been issued by PDE.

PDE application system () is used to track Home and School Visitor Certification.

Students should familiarize themselves with this system prior to application.

The Home and School Visitor certification falls under the category of Educational Specialist.

Information on the PDE TIMS electronic application process are available on the .

The state charges a $200* application fee as part of the certification process.
The above application fee is set by PDE and current as of 2018.

As with other professional certifications or licenses, the Home and School Visitor Educational Specialist Certification requires continuing education coursework in order to keep the certification active.

The PA Department of Education requires that persons holding Pennsylvania professional educator certification (including the Home and School Visitor Certification) acquire a specific number of Act 48 approved continuing education credit hours in order to maintain/renew their certifications. All credits/hours must be related to an educator’s certificate type or area of assignment, unless enrolled in an administrative program or approved by the school board. (see PA Board for specifics to your certification)

Bryn Mawr's Center for Center Professional Development program offers many Act 48 continuing education credit opportunities appropriate for those seeking to renew their HSV Certification. Each Professional Development contact hour is the equivalent of one Act 48 credit.
